Finals Week 2 - Lion Cubs March On
07/09/09

The Under 18's continued their impressive run through this year's finals series with a well deserved 9-point victory over the East Coast Eagles last Sunday. The Eagles had defeated Wollongong in there two previous meetings by 106 and 53 points respectively, but it was the Lions who prevailed in the clash that mattered most. From the outset, the young Lions were switched on, and clearly enjoyed the better of the opening term. Failing to capitalise on the scoreboard, the Lions lead by just 9 points at quarter time. The boys continued to attack in the 2nd term and by half-time lead by 23 points. Brendan Potter was leading a tight defence and Luke Rutter was dangerous in attack. You sensed the Eagles would mount a comeback at some point, and sure enough it came in the 3rd term. The Eagles piled on 5 goals for the quarter and at the same time restricted the Lions to just 2 points. Trailing by 6 points, the boys were asked to lift in the same manner they showed against Pennant Hills in the Elimination Final. Trent Hurst stepped up with 2 final quarter goals and Kale Temple played a telling quarter highlighted by some strong grabs and dashing runs around the grandstand wing. The Eagles had opportunities to goal late in the match but the Lions defence held firm, and the boys duly celebrated a great win at the final siren. This week we're up against southern neighbours St George. The two teams have split the points this year and just how the Preliminary Final will pan out is anybody's guess.
