Round 10 Update - Lions Put Up Fight
 23/6/09

The Under 18's did it the hard way against a gallant UNSW/ES side last weekend, but in the end recorded a vital 6 point win. Missing a host of players due to Swans, RAMS, senior duty and injury the boys began the day with 20 players and were further depleted when Luke Rutter suffered a serious knee injury. The young Lions also faced a gallant Bulldogs outfit determined to reverse a narrow loss the last time these sides faced off, and for large periods of the game it seemed they would do just that. But the the boys stood up when the game was on the line and are to be congratulated. The home side had to dig deep and found some goals late in the last quarter when all seemed lost. Such a gutsy win should give the boys confidence for many more tough challenges ahead.

The Reserves copped the worst of the weather on Saturday as they slogged it out with the Bulldogs. Torrential rain for much of the game meant this match would we won as much on desperation as on class. That's one area we don't lack in and the game was extremely tight for 3 quarters. The Bulldogs, perhaps with a little more at stake were able to find a way in the last quarter and get home for the win. In a great boost for the club, both Troy Bartlett and Harry Bown made their season debuts after studying abroad and could both be described as being "better for the run".

The Seniors were looking for 2 wins on the trot and the scalp of another finals contender. For 3 quarters an upset looked likely, but as with the reserves game, the Bulldogs found a way to win in the last quarter. After keeping the Bulldogs scoreless in the opening term, the visitors responded to lead by 12 points at half time. The Lions clawed their way back in the third term and led by a goal nearing three quarter time. In very wet conditions it looked like this game would go down to the wire. But two late goals to the Bulldogs in the 3rd term swung the momentum of the match and the Lions did not respond. 7 goals to nil for the day at the southern end of the ground in favour of the Bulldogs proved crucial. The Lions are improving, but need to focus on producing 4 quarter efforts.

Round 9 Update - Lions Win Again
15/6/09

The Under 18'swere coming off a win against Riverview during the bye period and looking to making it two in a row against the Campbelltown Blues. The boys played good footy from the outset and really stamped their authority on the match in the first half booting 10 goals while restricting the Blues to a solitary behind. Things got a little scrappy after half-time as we strayed away from the team things that had put us in such a strong position in the 1st half. The final margin of 107 points was impressive and helps claw back some percentage after earlier heavy losses, but there is still plenty to work on during the 2nd half of the year. Keep up the good work boys.

The Reserves were well beaten by an impressive Manly side, but put in a solid showing after quarter time and went some way to erasing last weeks embarrasing showing from the memory bank. The Wolves kicked 3 goals in 3 minutes to start the game and it looked a case of how far Manly. Not to be denied, the Lions boys showed plenty of pluck from that point on and really made a game of it. Whilst we never threatened the visitors the boys were prepared to move the ball on and take a chance. It's important we stay tight over the Uni holiday period and build on the improved showing on the weekend. Well to done to Mick Faulkner on his first game for the club and Pete Veerhuis who has taken the coaching reigns while Sam Lewis is overseas.

The Seniors had a mindset in the fortnight leading upto the Campbelltown game that it was a fantastic opportunity to get a win against fancied opposition and set themselves up for an improved second half of the season. And so it proved on a gloomy afternoon at Nth Dalton Park. However a win seemed unlikely when the Blues got out to a 4 goal lead midway through the 2nd term. Not to be denied the boys clawed some goals back and went into the main break only 7 points down. From there it was an arm wrestle for the rest of the afternoon. When the Blues again skipped 2 goals clear in the last quarter the chips were down, before Graeme Batty chimed in a with a couple of majors to see us home. There were countless desperate efforts by all players on the day in a performance which is a real shot in the arm for the whole club.

Lion Cub's Win Catch-up Game
4/6/09

The Under 18's won their catch-up game with Riverview College on Wednesday night, eventually prevailing 7.14 (56) to 3.2 (20) after a scrappy contest. Our boys had a weekend off way back in April as Riverview's high percentage of boarders means they don't compete during the school holidays. The corresponding fixture last year, also on a State of Origin night, saw the team arrive at Henson Park only to find the league posts still up. The game was cancelled and the team bus turned around. No such dramas this year.

Rain in the lead-up and showers on the night made ball handling extremely difficult and at times our boys tried to do too much with the football. Multiple handball and lateral movement were not on, these were get it, move it on, and play in front conditions. The Lions dominated the opening quarter, but some poor kicking meant we only had 1 goal to show for it. The defence did a great job and held Riverview scoreless. Sensing that they'd been let off the hook, the "View" lifted their intensity and jagged 3 second quarter goals, at one stage drawing level, and eventually going in to the main break a goal down.

The 3rd quarter saw the ball go back and forth between the halfback lines, and frustration was growing in the Lions camp at our inability to shake of a dogged Riverview outfit. The marks weren't sticking, kicks weren't hitting their targets and we couldn't turn plenty of possession into anything meaningful on the scoreboard. Amazingly, the teams only scored 3 points between them for the entire term.

So it came down to the last quarter scrap and you felt whoever kicked the first goal would get their tails up and go on with the job. Fortunately it was Lions who kicked that goal, and it was almost as if the shackles were released immediately. Suddenly we were winning the ball from the centre, and driving it into the forward line quick and direct, and when the ball hit the deck (as it did all night) we were able to crumb or keep the pressure on a stretched Riverview defence. Our defence built a wall which saw the ball never really come out of the Riverview backline, the school restricted to 1 behind for the term. 4 last quarter goals got the job done, but we'll need to learn from last night for the next time we play in wet and slippery conditions.

Well done boys, you guys continue to be the shining lights on-field for the Lions and are now pushing for a finals berth.
